Note | A widely referenced description of the origins of the Newman family in Virginia comes from W. F. Boogher. "Among the members of the Newman family who came to Virginia and left their impress upon the early history of the colony were Robert, William, John and Thomas Newman. They were, doubtless, relatives of John Newman, grocer, a member of the London Virginia Company in 1609, and in all probability came to Virginia at his suggestion in order to better their fortunes." |
Note | There has been quite a bit of speculation whether or not Robert, William, John and Thomas were brothers. In "The Newman Story", HF Newman asserts that they are brothers however no evidence has been found to support that claim. Author PE Newman in his 1995 genealogy of Thomas Newman speculates that William and Robert were brothers and John and Thomas were brothers based on the fact they settled two by two in different locales in Virginia. It should also be noted that since there is a 33 year span in their ages it is possible that they were half-brothers or cousins. This genealogy follows PE Newman's theory that there were two pairs of brothers and for organizational purposes we assume that John Newman was the common father. |
Note | PE Newman also researched the topic of John Newman being a member of the Virginia Company of London. The name of John Newman, London Grocer, does not appear on the list of individual grocer investors. The 1609 Charter list did include "the companie of grocers", which most likely was the livery Guild "Worshipful Company of Grocers of London" or group of grocer investors, and perhaps John Newman was one of those. |
